In 1973 many landlords were keeping houses empty as the financial advantages made this more profitable than renting them. At the same time local councils were demolishing excellent housing to make way for badly built new homes as they, in their turn, made more money from this than from properly administering the existing housing stock. In reaction an active squatting movement grew up and houses were broken open and occupied.
